In light of Lucasfilm canceling two Star Wars projects which were both focused on heroes of the New Republic, the development of a completely new show combining the ideas would solve multiple problems simultaneously. Unfortunately, the Rogue Squadron movie in development was recently taken off of Lucasfilm's release schedule and has been put on hold indefinitely. Likewise, the announced Rangers of the New Republic show set in the same era as The Mandalorian was canceled, as well. However, there's an easy fix to replace both projects.
Both Rogue Squadron and Rangers of the New Republic were set during the New Republic era and beyond, with a focus on fighter pilots. While the movie was allegedly going to be set after the events of the sequel trilogy, Rangers would have taken place five years after the events of Return of the Jedi, just like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. To that end, Star Wars has long had a space for a new show that would be easy to produce while also fulfilling the same tone and themes.
Why Rogue Squadron and Rangers of the New Republic Were Canceled In the case of Rogue Squadron, it was long reported that director Patty Jenkins was still attached to write and direct Rogue Squadron after numerous delays, though the most recent update grounded the film, with Lucasfilm confirming they'd pulled it from active development. Despite Jenkins' very exciting video announcing Rogue Squadron back in 2020 where she communicated her desire to bring a major fighter pilot movie to life in the galaxy far, far away, the film seems to have been put on the back burner indefinitely. Lucasfilm has reportedly been carefully restructuring the future of Star Wars movies behind the scenes, and Jenkins and Rogue Squadron are now no longer part of the plan.
