One key decision made during the extensive production of the Star Wars sequels allowed a brand-new era to spawn in the franchise, as highlighted by one of the series' central filmmakers of late: Dave Filoni. After the culmination of the prequel trilogy, many still viewed Return of the Jedi as the definitive ending of the Star Wars franchise. Despite new projects like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it was unlikely the future of the franchise would be explored unless George Lucas decided to bring his few plans for a sequel to life.
