The Star Wars prequels could’ve looked a lot different and perhaps been improved if George Lucas had decided to include certain deleted scenes. While the prequels aren’t without issues, the cut scenes would have better tied the movies together, giving a better insight into the world of the Jedi before, during, and near the end of the Clone War. Some of the cut ideas have since been explored in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television show, but their inclusion in the prequel films may have made them even better.
Attempting to tell a much bigger story than the original trilogy, the prequels needed to be executed in a concise manner. There was certainly a lot for Lucas to manage in terms of the pacing and length of the prequels, so it only makes sense that scenes that weren’t pertinent to the plot be cut. However, now that the Star Wars universe has expanded to explore more of the prequel era, these scenes provide more context to the happenings of fan-favorite characters.
8 Cut Phantom Menace Scene Explored Anakin's Life On Tatooine In a short clip from The Phantom Menace, a young Anakin Skywalker is seen fighting Greedo, the Rodian whom Han Solo killed in A New Hope. Greedo fought Anakin because he felt he had cheated in the pod race. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn was there to break up the fight and explain to Anakin that even though he didn’t cheat, he still had to respect Greedo and avoid resorting to violence. It’s a short scene, but shows Qui-Gon’s ability to connect with Anakin and get through to him. It feels grounding, yet important to see that Anakin was already prone to giving in to anger at such a young age.
7 Naboo Phantom Menace Scene Highlighted Jedi Skills A cut scene from The Phantom Menace showed Qui-Gon, his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Jar Jar Binks escaping from their underwater sub before it fell over a waterfall on the planet Naboo. The sequence further highlights Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan’s teamwork and capability as Jedi. While the scene has no real impact on the greater narrative of the film, it does highlight the relationship and ease between the Jedi Master and his Padawan, which was something audiences did not get to see much of during The Phantom Menace.
6 Anakin Meet Padme's Family In Attack Of The Clones In two deleted scenes from Attack of the Clones, Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala are seen on the latter's home planet of Naboo, where they get to interact with her family. In one of the scenes, Anakin is seen walking through a garden with Padme’s father Ruwee, discussing her safety. In another sequence, Anakin and Padme have a meal with her parents and sister. Later, Padme’s sister Sola calls Anakin her boyfriend, which the former denies and just calls them friends. These two scenes are lighthearted and show the beauty of Naboo, while also highlighting that Padme was harboring feelings for the Jedi Padawan.
While these scenes don’t have much action, they do set up Anakin and Padme’s romance. Much of Attack of the Clones felt forced or rushed, but these two scenes would have made Shakespearian love story feel more organic, allowing for more time to pass as their emotions grew. While it was obvious how Anakin felt for Padme, seeing a close family member see through Padme's stoic exterior would've shown her barriers slip even more.
