The Darksaber is one of Star Wars' most important lightsabers, appearing in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and The Mandalorian. According to Lucasfilm's Dave Filoni, the Darksaber was created when George Lucas heard of a story in which the Mandalorian rebel Pre Vizsla faced Obi-Wan Kenobi with a vibroblade. Lucas objected to the idea a vibroblade could stop a lightsaber, and came up with the Darksaber instead. Since then, the distinctive black lightsaber has become increasingly important in Star Wars canon, a symbol of Mandalorian leadership and one of the few indications Mandalorians and Jedi can find common ground.
The Darksaber was constructed just over a thousand years ago by Tarre Vizsla, the first known Mandalorian Jedi. Like all lightsabers, the Darksaber is powered by a Force-imbued kyber crystal, though the lightsaber's black color and distinctive sword-like shape are unique. The Darksaber also possesses unique attributes, as the wielder's emotional state influences the weight of the weapon; someone who lacks self-confidence feels crushed beneath its weight. Given the responsibilities that come with the Darksaber, it's easy to see why Din Djarin in particular struggled to use it.
