Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) has finally returned from his exile away from the known Star Wars galaxy, and his new home is incredibly significant. Having chosen the dark world of Dathomir to presumably serve as his base of operations, this planet and Thrawn's new allies help tease what his future Empire plans might look like. As such, Star Wars may be looking to correct a big change when it comes to his overall motivations in the established Star Wars canon.
Following the new Ahsoka show, Grand Admiral Thrawn successfully escaped his extragalactic exile on Peridea, the world he was sent to and trapped on for nearly a decade thanks to Jedi Ezra Bridger in the aftermath of Star Wars Rebels. Now, Thrawn is back after making his live-action debut in Ahsoka, having allied with the Force witches known as the Nightsisters who helped him make his dynamic return. To that end, Thrawn seemingly setting up shop on Dathomir is hugely important considering the planet's past in the Star Wars canon and Thrawn's own future.

Dathomir Has Always Been The Power Base Of Palpatine's Rivals First and foremost, Dathomir is incredibly important in the overall Star Wars lore and canon. Following their migration from Peridea, Dathomir became the homeworld of the Nightsisters who established a matriarchial society backed by the power of their dark magick. During the prequel trilogy era, Dathomir's Nightsisters were led by Mother Talzin, whom Palpatine himself believed to be a legitimate rival. According to E.K. Johnston's new novel Crimson Climb, Dathormir is also confirmed to have been the home of Darth Maul during the Dark Times. From Dathomir, Maul orchestrated five criminal syndicates – Black Sun, Crimson Dawn, the Hutts, the Crymorah, and the Pyke – in a subtle attempt to undermine Palpatine.
Now, Thrawn is based on Dathomir as well, the traditional homeworld of the Emperor's enemies. Likewise, he's also brought with him the remaining Nightsisters of Peridea known as the Great Mothers and what could very well be legions of Nightsister corpses just waiting to be revived by their dark magicks. Although the known Nightsisters were all slaughtered by General Grievous and his droid forces on Palpatine's orders during the Clone Wars, Grand Admiral Thrawn has seemingly given the Nightsisters a chance to be reborn during the New Republic era.
