Star Wars has been setting up Gray Jedi for over a decade, and this exciting theory suggests Rey's New Jedi Order movie can finally make them a reality. Gray Jedi is a term with two meanings: a Jedi who tries to balance the light and dark sides of the Force without being corrupted, and a Jedi who wishes to operate outside the strict guidelines of the Jedi High Council. The term appeared a few times in the old Star Wars Expanded Universe, now branded as Legends, but has not appeared in Disney canon so far. However, Rey's New Jedi Order movie presents the perfect opportunity to introduce Gray Jedi.
Gray Jedi have always been a controversial topic in the Star Wars community, with Matt Martin of the Lucasfilm Story Group believing the idea contradicts George Lucas' view on the Force. Lucas viewed the dark side as corruption and would not have endorsed a Jedi that tried to balance both sides of the Force equally. On the other hand, the second definition perfectly describes possible Gray Jedi in Star Wars canon, including Qui-Gon Jinn and Ahsoka Tano. Star Wars canon has already done a lot to set up Gray Jedi, especially in the last 10 years, making it possible for them to appear in Rey's New Jedi Order movie.
