Star Wars’ next movie is set to follow George Lucas’ old release schedule – but there could be an issue. After years of rumors and cancelations, Lucasfilm used Star Wars Celebration 2023 to announce the next three Star Wars movies. Now, however, just a few short months after the original announcement, all three upcoming Star Wars movies have had their release dates pushed.
This isn’t inherently surprising; given the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, plenty of projects are bound to be delayed. What is surprising, though, is the fact that the first of these new Star Wars films has been given a release date of May 2026. All three of the recent Star Wars sequel trilogy movies were eventually released in December to great financial (if not critical) success, after all, and many expected these new movies would follow the same pattern. There is, however, a symbolic reason this feels appropriate.
