Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is widely regarded as one of the greatest Star Wars games ever made, and while it now falls under the "Legends" banner, many of its characters, planets, and events still exist in the official canon. From fun easter eggs in the movies and TV shows to entire storylines from Legends becoming canon, KOTOR still has a big impact on modern Star Wars storytelling. The upcoming KOTOR remake proves this and suggests that even more aspects of the game will continue working their way back into canon.
This would be great for longtime KOTOR fans, especially with the series' troubled history. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords was rushed during development, leading to a large amount of missing content, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic III ended up being canceled. Even so, the team behind Star Wars: The Old Republic found ways to integrate unused concepts from KOTOR, producing the only new Legends content even to this day. With so much passion remaining for the KOTOR franchise, it's no wonder that the official canon has brought back so many elements from the groundbreaking video games.
20 Darth Revan Darth Revan was the main character in KOTOR and had one of the most fascinating stories in the Star Wars Legends timeline. Originally a Jedi who turned to the dark side, Revan eventually returned to the light and saved the Republic from his former Sith apprentice, Darth Malak. While he almost appeared in the Mortis arc of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Revan's scene was cut by George Lucas. However, Revan was confirmed to still exist in canon thanks to a mention in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – The Visual Dictionary, which confirmed that the Sith Eternal army's 3rd Legion was called the "Revan Legion."
19 The Rakata The Rakata first appeared in KOTOR as a mysterious yet powerful species that shaped the galaxy in ancient times. They were known as the Builders, drawing on the dark side of the Force to power their technology as they created an Infinite Empire and conquered worlds throughout the galaxy. Their creations included early hyperdrive technology, the Star Forge, and the Forcesaber, which the Je'Daii Order used to eventually create the first lightsabers. Andor's Knights of the Old Republic easter egg confirmed that the Rakata exist in canon when Luthen Rael mentioned "the uprising against the Rakatan invaders" in season 1, episode 4 "Aldhani."
18 Malachor Malachor V served as the final battleground of the Mandalorian Wars and the final level of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords. Before turning to the dark side, Revan led his army in a final attack on the Mandalorian invaders, single-handedly defeating Mandalore the Ultimate. However, Revan's forces unleashed the Mass Shadow Generator, a superweapon that destroyed anyone on the surface and left Malachor V a scarred wasteland. The name was shortened to Malachor in Star Wars canon but had a similar history, as a Sith superweapon destroyed all Jedi and Sith on the surface in what became known as the Great Scourge of Malachor.
17 The Mandalorian Wars The Mandalorian Wars were the beginning of Revan's eventual turn to the dark side, and a similar conflict occurred at some point in Star Wars canon. In Star Wars Rebels season 3, episode 15 "Trials of the Darksaber," Kanan Jarrus told Sabine Wren that "the Jedi won the war with Mandalore" and Star Wars: The High Republic – Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule confirmed that the Republic went to war with Mandalore at some point in its history. Whether the conflict happened the same way or shaped Revan's story in canon is unknown, but Star Wars has continued to hint at an ancient Mandalorian-Jedi War in The Mandalorian.
16 Taris Taris was the first planet visited in KOTOR, and its surface was decimated by Malak's Sith forces. The planet itself first appeared in canon in Star Wars: Aftermath by Chuck Wendig, though Taris Senator Tynnra Pamlo was a member of the Rebel Alliance Council in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
15 Czerka Corporation The Czerka Corporation was a major entity in the first KOTOR game, creating the Sandcrawlers on Tatooine that the Jawas later took possession of. Czerka has been mentioned several times in canon, appearing once in Star Wars: Master & Apprentice by Claudia Gray.
14 Tatooine Was Once A Water Planet KOTOR first revealed that Tatooine was once an ocean planet, a history which was expanded in Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema. This carried over to canon in The Book of Boba Fett when the titular character explained that the Tuskens had laid claim to the Dune Sea ever since the oceans dried.
13 HK-Series Assassin Droid HK-47 was a playable character in KOTOR, a highly unique variant of the HK-series assassin droids developed by the Czerka Corporation. The HK assassin droids returned to canon in Legends of the Alliance, a companion app to Star Wars: Imperial Assault by Fantasy Flight Games.
12 Manaan Manaan was another primary location of the first KOTOR game, the aquatic homeworld of the amphibious Selkath species. The planet carried over to several canon guides and is mentioned through optional dialogue in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
11 Jedi Temple On Dantooine Dantooine was used as a base by the Rebel Alliance before the start of the Galactic Civil War, but it was the site of a Jedi Temple long before that. KOTOR allowed players to explore the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine at various points throughout the story, learning the ways of the Jedi and interacting with other members of the order. The Star Wars Roleplaying sourcebook Gadgets and Gear revealed that the Jedi Order once has a temple on Dantooine that was abandoned by the time of the Clone Wars.
10 Peragus System The Peragus Mining Facility was the first level of KOTOR II, introducing players to the game's main characters. The system was made canon in Star Wars Rebels: Chopper Chase, an online game that takes place sometime during the show's first two seasons.
9 Meetra Surik Originally known as the Jedi Exile when she was the main character of KOTOR II, Meetra Surik was later given a name in Star Wars: The Old Republic – Revan by Drew Karpyshyn. She defied the Jedi Council as a Padawan to aid Revan during the Mandalorian Wars, but after the conflict ended tragically on Malachor V, she willingly returned to face judgment and was exiled from the Jedi Order. Following the First Jedi Purge, she returned to help defeat the Sith Triumvirate and save the Republic. Surik was an expression used in the Star Wars: The High Republic publishing initiative and is almost certainly a reference to Meetra Surik.
8 Telos Telos IV was a key planet in KOTOR II, a planet ravaged during the Mandalorian Wars and the location of a Hidden Jedi Academy after the purge. The planet appeared as Telos in canon, first mentioned in Star Wars: Catalyst – A Rogue One Novel by James Luceno.
7 Dxun Dxun was the "Demon Moon" of Onderon where the Mandalorian Wars started, and a playable level in KOTOR II. The moon was first mentioned in canon in the Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine.
6 Korriban (AKA Moraband) Korriban was the ancient homeworld of the Sith species and the Sith Order that adopted their name, serving as an important location in both KOTOR games. The planet had several tombs dedicated to powerful Sith Lords and housed a Sith Academy built during the reign of Revan and Malak, and continued to draw in new Sith for thousands of years. While the planet remains canon thanks to The Clone Wars, Korriban's name was changed to Moraband by Lucas, though the episode guide's trivia gallery stated that the planet had many names throughout its history.
