Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is one of the most intriguing Star Wars projects in Disney’s pipeline, as it aims to tell a timeless coming-of-age tale set in a new area of the galaxy far, far away. Despite Disney's reluctance to release too many details about it, the series has already pulled a number of famous directors, including: Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert from Everything Everywhere All at Once, Jon Watts from the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy, Bryce Dallas Howard and Lee Isaac Chung from The Mandalorian, and David Lowery from The Green Knight. Filming finished in January 2023, and the series is expected to begin releasing on Disney+ in late 2023.
As if the slew of famous directors wasn’t enough, Disney has also approved a massive budget for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which even exceeds that of The Mandalorian. According to the premise, Skeleton Crew tells the story of four kids lost in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy, trying to make their way back to their homeworld. Despite the show centering around kids, Skeleton Crew’s creators have assured audiences it is not a “kid's show,” and that there will also be plenty of dark plot points the characters will face.
Jude Law One of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’s biggest casting scores is English actor Jude Law, who plays an unnamed Jedi assisting the four children on their adventure. Given Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is set during the same time period as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka, Jude Law’s character is likely a new Jedi who survived Order 66. Since Star Wars has a tendency to gravitate toward parental figures like Din Djarin and Obi-Wan Kenobi, it looks as if Jude Law’s Jedi will take on a protective role for these four children while they learn to navigate the galaxy and find their way home.
2023 will be a big year for Law. In addition to playing his leading role as a Jedi in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, he will also be portraying Captain Hook in Peter Pan & Wendy, as well as Henry VIII in the historical drama Firebrand. Fans may recognize Law from Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movies, where he played Dr. John Watson alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock. More recently, Law also played a younger version of Albus Dumbledore in two of the Fantastic Beasts sequels.
Ryan Kiera Armstrong Star Wars releases in 2023 are branching out by centering Skeleton Crew on four largely unknown child actors and actresses. Nevertheless, a sneak peek at Star Wars celebration gave fans a few hints as to what kind of characters the children play. Ryan Kiera Armstrong is a young American actress known for playing Charlie McGee in the 2022 film Firestarter, as well as Alma Gardner in a few episodes of American Horror Story: Double Feature. Based off of the sneak peek, Armstrong’s character in Skeleton Crew is named Gwen, and she is supposedly the daughter of Law’s Jedi character.
Kryriana Kratter Kyriana Kratter is another up-and-coming actress, whose character details are largely unknown. Fans may recognize Kratter for playing Nadine in Disney’s Bunk’d series. As seen in the sneak peek, her character in Skeleton Crew wears a sort of flip down visor, reminiscent of Geordi La Forge’s from Star Trek: The Next Generation. It’s possible her character is blind and needs the visor in order to see, but it also may just be a helpful enhancement.
Ravi Cabot-Conyers Ravi Cabot-Conyers is an American actor playing another one of the lost four children. Many fans will recognize him for voicing Antonio Madrigal in Disney’s smash-hit musical Encanto. At the beginning of the sneak peek, Cabo-Conyers’ character is seen at school attending a class taught by a droid. While he can also be seen hanging around Law’s character throughout the preview, not much else is known about his character or what sort of role he will have in Skeleton Crew.
Robert Timothy Smith Robert Timothy Smith appears to be the only one of the four children who plays an alien, and given that Skeleton Crew is still in post-production, there are very few shots of his character with completed CGI. However, based off the sneak peek it’s clear that his character is an Ortolan, a blue and blubbery species whose most famous member is Max Rebo from Jabba's Palace in Return of the Jedi. He may be recognizable him as Hayden in Good Girls.
