Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 3.
The Mandalorian continues to offer new details on the New Republic, a major Star Wars faction led by a well-known original trilogy character. While The Mandalorian borrows from all three Star Wars trilogies, the hit TV show takes place shortly after Return of the Jedi. Therefore, The Mandalorian has given Star Wars its best shot at properly establishing the New Republic in live-action after Star Wars: The Force Awakens failed to.
It is important to note that The Force Awakens took place 30 years after Return of the Jedi, meaning that it could not possibly tell the New Republic’s origin story. Still, Star Wars’ first theatrical movie since the Star Wars prequels could have explored the galaxy’s political climate more. Most of the Star Wars canon information on the New Republic was revealed in novels such as Claudia Gray’s Bloodline.
