The war between the light and dark sides of the Force has raged across the galaxy for millennia. There's a sense in which the different forms of government perfectly represent the different aspects of the Force; Sith tend to hoard power by establishing empires, while the Jedi Order exists in a form of symbiosis with democratic republics. The defeat of Emperor Palpatine in Return of the Jedi was soon followed by the Empire's collapse, in part because of the Emperor's own contingency plans.
Sadly, the fall of the Empire was only a brief blip in galactic history – so brief life under the Empire's successor, the New Republic, has yet to be explored in any depth in Star Wars canon.
